민수기 22:1–41 (NKRV)
1이스라엘 자손이 또 길을 떠나 모압 평지에 진을 쳤으니 요단 건너편 곧 여리고 맞은편이더라
2십볼의 아들 발락이 이스라엘이 아모리인에게 행한 모든 일을 보았으므로
3모압이 심히 두려워하였으니 이스라엘 백성이 많음으로 말미암아 모압이 이스라엘 자손 때문에 번민하더라
4미디안 장로들에게 이르되 이제 이 무리가 소가 밭의 풀을 뜯어먹음 같이 우리 사방에 있는 것을 다 뜯어먹으리로다 하니 그 때에 십볼의 아들 발락이 모압 왕이었더라
5그가 사신을 브올의 아들 발람의 고향인 강 가 브돌에 보내어 발람을 부르게 하여 이르되 보라 한 민족이 애굽에서 나왔는데 그들이 지면에 덮여서 우리 맞은편에 거주하였고
6우리보다 강하니 청하건대 와서 나를 위하여 이 백성을 저주하라 내가 혹 그들을 쳐서 이겨 이 땅에서 몰아내리라 그대가 복을 비는 자는 복을 받고 저주하는 자는 저주를 받을 줄을 내가 앎이니라
7모압 장로들과 미디안 장로들이 손에 복채를 가지고 떠나 발람에게 이르러 발락의 말을 그에게 전하매
8발람이 그들에게 이르되 이 밤에 여기서 유숙하라 여호와께서 내게 이르시는 대로 너희에게 대답하리라 모압 귀족들이 발람에게서 유숙하니라
9하나님이 발람에게 임하여 말씀하시되 너와 함께 있는 이 사람들이 누구냐
10발람이 하나님께 아뢰되 모압 왕 십볼의 아들 발락이 내게 보낸 자들이니이다 이르기를
11보라 애굽에서 나온 민족이 지면에 덮였으니 이제 와서 나를 위하여 그들을 저주하라 내가 혹 그들을 쳐서 몰아낼 수 있으리라 하나이다
12하나님이 발람에게 이르시되 너는 그들과 함께 가지도 말고 그 백성을 저주하지도 말라 그들은 복을 받은 자들이니라
13발람이 아침에 일어나서 발락의 귀족들에게 이르되 너희는 너희의 땅으로 돌아가라 여호와께서 내가 너희와 함께 가기를 허락하지 아니하시느니라
14모압 귀족들이 일어나 발락에게로 가서 전하되 발람이 우리와 함께 오기를 거절하더이다
15발락이 다시 그들보다 더 높은 고관들을 더 많이 보내매
16그들이 발람에게로 나아가서 그에게 이르되 십볼의 아들 발락의 말씀에 청하건대 아무것에도 거리끼지 말고 내게로 오라
17내가 그대를 높여 크게 존귀하게 하고 그대가 내게 말하는 것은 무엇이든지 시행하리니 청하건대 와서 나를 위하여 이 백성을 저주하라 하시더이다
18발람이 발락의 신하들에게 대답하여 이르되 발락이 그 집에 가득한 은금을 내게 줄지라도 내가 능히 여호와 내 하나님의 말씀을 어겨 덜하거나 더하지 못하겠노라
19그런즉 이제 너희도 이 밤에 여기서 유숙하라 여호와께서 내게 무슨 말씀을 더하실는지 알아보리라
20밤에 하나님이 발람에게 임하여 이르시되 그 사람들이 너를 부르러 왔거든 일어나 함께 가라 그러나 내가 네게 이르는 말만 준행할지니라
21발람이 아침에 일어나서 자기 나귀에 안장을 지우고 모압 고관들과 함께 가니
22그가 감으로 말미암아 하나님이 진노하시므로 여호와의 사자가 그를 막으려고 길에 서니라 발람은 자기 나귀를 탔고 그의 두 종은 그와 함께 있더니
23나귀가 여호와의 사자가 칼을 빼어 손에 들고 길에 선 것을 보고 길에서 벗어나 밭으로 들어간지라 발람이 나귀를 길로 돌이키려고 채찍질하니
24여호와의 사자는 포도원 사이 좁은 길에 섰고 좌우에는 담이 있더라
25나귀가 여호와의 사자를 보고 몸을 담에 대고 발람의 발을 그 담에 짓누르매 발람이 다시 채찍질하니
26여호와의 사자가 더 나아가서 좌우로 피할 데 없는 좁은 곳에 선지라
27나귀가 여호와의 사자를 보고 발람 밑에 엎드리니 발람이 노하여 자기 지팡이로 나귀를 때리는지라
28여호와께서 나귀 입을 여시니 발람에게 이르되 내가 당신에게 무엇을 하였기에 나를 이같이 세 번을 때리느냐
29발람이 나귀에게 말하되 네가 나를 거역하기 때문이니 내 손에 칼이 있었더면 곧 너를 죽였으리라
30나귀가 발람에게 이르되 나는 당신이 오늘까지 당신의 일생 동안 탄 나귀가 아니냐 내가 언제 당신에게 이같이 하는 버릇이 있었더냐 그가 말하되 없었느니라
31그 때에 여호와께서 발람의 눈을 밝히시매 여호와의 사자가 손에 칼을 빼들고 길에 선 것을 그가 보고 머리를 숙이고 엎드리니
32여호와의 사자가 그에게 이르되 너는 어찌하여 네 나귀를 이같이 세 번 때렸느냐 보라 내 앞에서 네 길이 사악하므로 내가 너를 막으려고 나왔더니
33나귀가 나를 보고 이같이 세 번을 돌이켜 내 앞에서 피하였느니라 나귀가 만일 돌이켜 나를 피하지 아니하였더면 내가 벌써 너를 죽이고 나귀는 살렸으리라
34발람이 여호와의 사자에게 말하되 내가 범죄하였나이다 당신이 나를 막으려고 길에 서신 줄을 내가 알지 못하였나이다 당신이 이를 기뻐하지 아니하시면 나는 돌아가겠나이다
35여호와의 사자가 발람에게 이르되 그 사람들과 함께 가라 내가 네게 이르는 말만 말할지니라 발람이 발락의 고관들과 함께 가니라
36발락은 발람이 온다 함을 듣고 모압 변경의 끝 아르논 가에 있는 성읍까지 가서 그를 영접하고
37발락은 발람에게 이르되 내가 특별히 사람을 보내어 그대를 부르지 아니하였느냐 그대가 어찌 내게 오지 아니하였느냐 내가 어찌 그대를 높여 존귀하게 하지 못하겠느냐
38발람이 발락에게 이르되 내가 오기는 하였으나 무엇을 말할 능력이 있으리이까 하나님이 내 입에 주시는 말씀 그것을 말할 뿐이니이다
39발람이 발락과 동행하여 기럇후솟에 이르러서는
40발락이 소와 양을 잡아 발람과 그와 함께 한 고관들을 대접하였더라
41아침에 발락이 발람과 함께 하고 그를 인도하여 바알의 산당에 오르매 발람이 거기서 이스라엘 백성의 진 끝까지 보니라

1Then the people of Israel set out and camped in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho.
2And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
3And Moab was in great dread of the people, because they were many. Moab was overcome with fear of the people of Israel.
4And Moab said to the elders of Midian, “This horde will now lick up all that is around us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field.” So Balak the son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time,
5sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor at Pethor, which is near the River in the land of the people of Amaw, to call him, saying, “Behold, a people has come out of Egypt. They cover the face of the earth, and they are dwelling opposite me.
6Come now, curse this people for me, since they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them from the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”
7So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the fees for divination in their hand. And they came to Balaam and gave him Balak’s message.
8And he said to them, “Lodge here tonight, and I will bring back word to you, as the Lord speaks to me.” So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.
9And God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?”
10And Balaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me, saying,
11‘Behold, a people has come out of Egypt, and it covers the face of the earth. Now come, curse them for me. Perhaps I shall be able to fight against them and drive them out.’ ”
12God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them. You shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.”
13So Balaam rose in the morning and said to the princes of Balak, “Go to your own land, for the Lord has refused to let me go with you.”
14So the princes of Moab rose and went to Balak and said, “Balaam refuses to come with us.”
15Once again Balak sent princes, more in number and more honorable than these.
16And they came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Zippor: ‘Let nothing hinder you from coming to me,
17for I will surely do you great honor, and whatever you say to me I will do. Come, curse this people for me.’ ”
18But Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, “Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the command of the Lord my God to do less or more.
19So you, too, please stay here tonight, that I may know what more the Lord will say to me.”
20And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men have come to call you, rise, go with them; but only do what I tell you.”
21So Balaam rose in the morning and saddled his donkey and went with the princes of Moab.
22But God’s anger was kindled because he went, and the angel of the Lord took his stand in the way as his adversary. Now he was riding on the donkey, and his two servants were with him.
23And the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road, with a drawn sword in his hand. And the donkey turned aside out of the road and went into the field. And Balaam struck the donkey, to turn her into the road.
24Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, with a wall on either side.
25And when the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, she pushed against the wall and pressed Balaam’s foot against the wall. So he struck her again.
26Then the angel of the Lord went ahead and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right or to the left.
27When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam. And Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he struck the donkey with his staff.
28Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”
29And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have made a fool of me. I wish I had a sword in my hand, for then I would kill you.”
30And the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey, on which you have ridden all your life long to this day? Is it my habit to treat you this way?” And he said, “No.”
31Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, with his drawn sword in his hand. And he bowed down and fell on his face.
32And the angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to oppose you because your way is perverse before me.
33The donkey saw me and turned aside before me these three times. If she had not turned aside from me, surely just now I would have killed you and let her live.”
34Then Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “I have sinned, for I did not know that you stood in the road against me. Now therefore, if it is evil in your sight, I will turn back.”
35And the angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but speak only the word that I tell you.” So Balaam went on with the princes of Balak.
36When Balak heard that Balaam had come, he went out to meet him at the city of Moab, on the border formed by the Arnon, at the extremity of the border.
37And Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not send to you to call you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able to honor you?”
38Balaam said to Balak, “Behold, I have come to you! Have I now any power of my own to speak anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, that must I speak.”
39Then Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath-huzoth.
40And Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent for Balaam and for the princes who were with him.
41And in the morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-baal, and from there he saw a fraction of the people.
